Safe streets. Over the past few years, there has been a notable uptick of vehicular violence in our SMD. With 5 charter schools and plenty of young families, we need to get a handle on the cars that recklessly speed through our community. I plan to work with DDOT, as well as other ANC commissioners, to get the ball rolling on Traffic Safety Investigations with actionable outcomes. While I can’t install a raised crosswalk myself, I’m going to use the tools at my disposal to ensure people don’t get hurt or killed due to an entirely-avoidable problem.
ANC meetings consume time and energy, and not everyone is able to devote their attention to the SMD. As commissioner, I will focus on communicating with the residents in my SMD in an asynchronous manner through regular blogging, as well as a newsletter. This should hopefully increase awareness of the issues upon which I’m currently focusing, and encourage residents to reach back with their own perspectives and input.
Q: What positive change have you seen in your SMD that you’d like to see continue to improve?

A: The Metropolitan Branch Trail is a lovely resource to have. Not only does it enable residents to get to or from NoMa and Fort Totten, but it’s also proven to be a backbone for development that has brought more amenities to the neighborhood. However, there is a glaring hole in this important piece of infrastructure (literally!): Right now there is a gap in the trail where walkers and cyclists are unceremoniously dumped onto 8th St NE. While there are plans to fix this, and simultaneously improve safety for the schools in the area, they haven’t been acted upon. Moving this project forward will be one of my highest priorities.
