I have previous board experience. I served on crosby and shakopee school boards. I was on facilities, negotioans and curriculum committees. I have been involved in the process of interviewing and hiring/firing supt and principal positions. I feel my drive, passion and the ability to put our students first gives me an advantage over the rest of the field. I have no personal/political agendas when I get on the board. I want to build an environment within our district worthy having students and parents WANT to be in this district. I feel my role in leadership roles in my employment and my previous athletic careers, make me an exceptional candidate to work collaboratively with our staff community to make this district a great place to belong
First and foremost will be safety and security of our students. We have the ability to put armed personnel in evry one of our schools.

Build a healthy safe non distractive environment worthy of the students that attend dist 181. Work collaboratively with staff, parents and students to make isd 181 a place to want to be.
I would like to implement a policy to have armed officers at every one of our schools. Work with local law enforcement and ex military to provide security to our schools. Only one entrance available for each building after school starts. And only certain entrances for coming to and leaving our schools.

I have thoughtfully considered running for the school board because I want to use my professional experience as an educator to ensure all learners continue to have access to compassionate, inclusive, evidenced based education. I have raised 5 children who attended Brainerd Schools and were active in extra-curricular activities. I worked for 32 years in two area school districts as a school social worker. I feel I bring a unique perspective to the table having worked closely with school administrators and district leadership, side by side with teachers and support staff, all while helping families navigate the educational experience for their learners. I also want to support strengthening the trust between the community and District 181.
*Ensure all students have access to safe, compassionate, inclusive, high quality education. *Foster a collaborative environment where the citizens work together to serve students, giving them opportunities to become good citizens, achieve academic success and thrive in our global world. *Make decisions about what strategies will help reduce the impact of the learning and instructional challenges resulting from COVID-19. Our communities are stronger and safer when we support students.

I will support programs and educational opportunities that prepare school staff to nurture a culture of inclusion and respect that is welcoming to all students within their building and their classrooms. Initiatives that support a positive school climate, teach positive behavioral expectations and digital citizenship, and promote student's social, emotional, behavioral and academic successes, while engaging families and caring adults, are essential to building safety in our schools.

My unique background of a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Mathematics, being a substitute teacher, and my continued military service of 20+ years gives me a unique lens to view the diverse topics that face our district. I feel my ability to listen to all opinions with a non-partisan mindset sets me apart from the other candidates. I am currently very collaborative with past and current the school board members and was one of few community members that attended the selection process for the new superintendent. Lastly, I feel that the best candidates should have children in the district and can understand the current climate of the district in order to make conscious and educated decisions on their behalf.
First, collaboration with other board members and district staff to solidify a comprehensive budget plan is imperative to the future of ISD 181. Secondly, I want to focus on current policy to remove the communication disconnect regarding disciplinary or intervention actions between students, parents, and the district, which will provide transparency of expectation to all involved. Lastly, Advocate for student and educator representation at board meetings to allow for their voices to be heard.
I would encourage collective and collaborate communication from students, parents, educators, and administration to understand what measures can be put into place to ensure that all shareholders feel like their safety expectations are being met, within our district buildings. Nothing is more important, as a board of education, than to promote and ensure that EVERY student feels safe and is offered a welcoming, equitable educational environment.

My experience as a retired AF Colonel, substitute teacher, volunteer, and coach will bring a unique perspective to the board. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from Troy State University. I served 29 years on active duty serving in 7 states and 2 countries, including a deployment to Iraq. I spent the last 15 years of my career in executive leadership positions managing multi-million dollar budgets, enforcing policies, and leading organizations with over 1,500 personnel. I am confident I can make tough decisions that are both fair and impartial. I will work hard to push back on policies that do not serve the best interests of our school district.
First, ensure we hire and retain highly qualified teachers and staff to provide the best educational opportunities for ALL students. Second, ensure our curriculum remains relevant and challenging to best prepare students for success after high school whether they enter the work force, learn a trade, or attend college. Finally, engage parents, businesses, and community members to ensure they have the opportunity to be heard and have a “say” in what we want to achieve as a school district.
I will review existing policies to ensure we have the right safety procedures in place and engage with local law enforcement to better understand current and emerging threats. I will meet with staff and teachers to ensure they are informed, supported, and trained to respond to emergency situations. I will also work hard to establish open lines of communication with students, teachers, staff, parents, and the community to ensure we ALL remain vigilant in keeping our children and schools safe.

I was a classroom teacher/coach/advisor in public education for over 35 years. I want to use my God given talents and skills to help guide our children’s public school educational experiences and opportunities to the best fiscally responsible experiences we can provide for them. I will ALWAYS keep our students, staff, parents and community as my top priority. I will base my decisions based on my research, fact findings, doing my homework, listening to all who want to share their opinion, keeping an open mind, compromising if needed and solving problems as a team player. I will respect the chain of command and ask the tough questions if needed. I was humbled and honored during my career when asked to implement unique and successful programs
Our students needs in academics, public safety and co and extra curricular experiences will be my top priorities. However, we also need to address recruiting and retaining the best licensed teachers avail able, class sizes, fair and equitable funding for schools including addressing the special education cross subsidy issue and developing community and business partnerships with our schools. We also must not forget about academics that provide life long skills for our children.
EVERY student needs to feel welcomed and safe. Policies Ed to be a forced for bullying, harassment and treating anyone disrespectful and other than kind. Inclusion and and acceptance needs to be promoted over and over and over. As a handicapped child, I personally felt threatened and discriminated against. The old adage, “ treat others like you want to be treated” has never been more important than now. Our staff and everyone that enters our building needs to demonstrate these qualities.
