With nearly 40 years working in education, I continue to have passion for educational excellence. Having been a student (and later a teacher) myself in this district and being a mother of three former students here, I continue to have my ear to the ground on all issues related to education in our district.  I want to ensure quality education for all students and ensure staff feel challenged, appreciated, and respected.  Additionally, I have had experience working on other boards–both state and local.  (U of MN National Writing Project board, district curriculum committee, library board, patient advisory board, hospital board). I know how boards work–with collaboration and hard work.
Three priorities: 1) academic excellence: I support classes/programs/accommodations each student needs to achieve their highest potential.2) safety: students and staff need to feel safe; this includes physical health AND mental health. I support programs/protocols that promote physical/mental health security. 3) school-community collaboration: the community and schools must partner and collaborate–creating a supportive, nurturing environment for student learning and staff excellence.
As mentioned in #2, feeling safe in school is essential for students and staff.  Currently the district trains staff and students to understand and follow safety protocols–this addresses physical safety, but helping students and staff to achieve and maintain good mental health is also vital.  Access to school psychologists and demystifying identification and treatment of mental health issues is also of utmost importance.

I have served nearly eight years as a member of our school board and during my time I have been: Chairman (2), Vice Chair (2), Treasurer (2) and clerk (1). This gives me a unique and very qualified perspective when making decisions on the board. My two years as Chair were COVID years and I believe we came out as a district in a very good position due to an effective leadership team and a carefully executed plan. Before moving to Albert Lea, I was a high school Teacher and coach for nearly 10 years. I am very fiscally responsible as I own and operate two successful businesses in town and understand the effect of taxes on our community and how to effectively build and operate within a sound budget.
My top three priorities are: closing the gap on learning loss that occurred during COVID, creating a safer learning and working environment for our students and staff and hiring and retaining the best possible staff for our school. If I can add a fourth, I believe we need to maintain our general fund balance (12%) so we can retain our strong financial position in case state funding is cut again and the burden is placed on the local districts.
As a board, we just voted to spend close to $1 million dollars to upgrade all of our buildings entrances to be more safe and secure. We will also use these monies for other security upgrades throughout the district. I want to hire another School Resource Officer for the middle school and continue to train our current staff to assist in security issues. I also believe the root of these problems comes directly from social media, so we need to train our parents and staff about these dangers.

I bring younger visions due to age and I am currently going to school to be a teacher, so what better person being on the school board then someone that is currently learning about schools and what issues are going on in other school districts. I also am apart of the school district, being a current employee. I also used to work in the school district as a different role, but currently am in a different role. I would bring a younger perspective and vision for the school board and would be able to keep the school board up to date with new and improved trends or other things that would be relevant to being a member of the school board.
If I am elected I would like to focus on the students the most as a whole, but specifically the special needs students. Those students are looked down on and I feel like that they don't have a big enough voice. I would also like to focus on teachers and make sure they are getting the support they need, whether it be with students or their mental health. And finally, I would focus on parents, it is our job to make sure that parents are at ease when sending their children to school.
I would work with teachers to make sure they are not only getting the proper training to make sure their students and themselves stay safe, but they have the essential equipment in their room, that they can easily access in order to keep everyone safe. I would also work with staff to make sure they had proper training and equipment that is easily accessible no matter where they are in the building, so they can stay safe in case of an emergency.

I bring to the position over forty years of experience in education. I have served as a coach to elementary students, a teacher and coach to junior high students, and a teacher, counselor, and activities advisor to high school students. In addition, I have been a college faculty member and counselor, financial aid director, student service administrator, accreditation officer, a mentor to high school social studies teachers, and have led college strategic planning. More recently, I have taught college classes attended by District 241 students and have been a student mentor in the Discovery History Program. This is a partnership between Albert Lea High School and the Freeborn County Historical Museum.
First, we need to see thoughtful, student-centered action to improve instruction. The district has demonstrated that such planning can improve science scores. We need to do the same in math and reading. Second, a review of process and action plans to address student/school safety are a must. Plans are in place to address access to the schools but more needs to be done. Third, I would want to explore how we can offer more College Credits in High School in career-technical fields.
Our mission speaks to the emotional development of our students. School safety is critical to that development. I would want to examine critical incident procedures. The review would also include an assessment of the process to refer troubled students to school counselors and social workers. I have met the school resource officer. He has a demanding job to cover all of the buildings within the school district. I would want to explore if an addition officer is needed.
