I have a broad experiential background – both as a student with 30+ years of formal education (including medical school, surgical residency and my current PhD program in Healthcare Informatics) and as a parent in the district (we have been in the district for 10 years, and we have kids that have and have had IEPs and 504 plans, mental health issues like anxiety, are in the Advanced Learner programs, and have attended 7 of the 10 schools in the district). I know what makes for a good education. I am biracial and have a child in the LGBTQ+ community, so I can be a voice for those who often go unheard. I have been trained to make difficult decisions by seeking out as much background information as possible and carefully weighing options.
To further improve policy on health and safety, including dealing with the residual effects of the pandemic, managing the increasing mental health issues, and decreasing the frequency and impact of bullying in our schools. I would also like to go beyond the "Belonging" goal and move towards inclusivity so that the schools are places where all students feel valued, heard, and respected. Finally, we need to improve transparency so all stakeholders are more involved and engaged in policy decisions.
I would work to include staff and teachers in the decisions that are made around health and safety. Staff and teachers are also asking for more training, not only in mental health and safety, but also in diversity and inclusion efforts, which can significantly improve a student's sense of safety and well-being. Today's society also requires a heightened need for physical safety and security from outside threats, and I would work to ensure protocols are in place and staff are adequately trained.
