Seeking this position has made me think and rethink about why I would believe that I am a quality candidate for this position. For starters, I spent my career in education in a variety of roles. My first teaching position was at Escuela Americana in San Salvador, El Salvador. I also taught in Bolivia, and Pakistan before returning to NDSU for graduate school in Counseling. I was hired at Heart of the Lakes Elementary in 1992 and served as counselor there until 1997. I received my principal license and was HOTL principal and PHS Principal before going back overseas. Returning to MN has reinforced the idea of how blessed we are and that there is a big world out there that students need to be prepared for.
If elected I believe that students' safety, well-being, and achievement must be our main goals. These three goals are only achievable if we are hiring great teaching and support personnel who also believe in this mission.
In this day and age safety is a huge concern . The data are clear that there are lots of ways to make our schools safer and none more important than building the kinds of relationships between students and staff where everyone feels heard, seen, and respected. As a board member, I believe I can model and promote the kind of behavior from our adults so our students can feel comfortable and possess the skills necessary to speak up and speak out for their own well-being.
