Our district needs help and new ideas. I am an outsider. I am not beholden to the teachers’ unions or the educational bureaucracy. I plan on being a voice for parents and the children.
Transparency in Training and Curriculum. School Resource Officers (Not police liaisons). The declining standards in math, reading and science.
We need SRO's for our district. Not Police liasons. The school resource officer (SRO) is a carefully selected, specifically trained, and properly equipped full-time law enforcement officer with sworn law enforcement authority, trained in school-based law enforcement and crisis response, assigned by the employing law enforcement agency to work in the school using community-oriented policing concepts.
I have been a resident for close to 20 years and am deeply invested in this community. My children attend 622 schools and I am the product of public schools. I have volunteered in the community and helped run the parent teacher group at my children’s elementary school. I am the current Interim School Board member. Professionally, I am an HR professional and have experience working in a school district (and other types of organizations) and am familiar with workforce management, staffing, and engagement. I am a strong proponent of public education and its importance to a community; and a strong proponent of youth voice and student engagement. I believe all these things will help me be successful in this role.
1) Positive student engagement support achievement, so I'd ensure student and staff engagement through continued mental health supports and review and assess where they can improve; 2) Lack of equity in schools continue to impact how students show up, I will support the review of policies and procedures to ensure disparate treatment and impact is not occurring; 3) Community involvement positively impacts students so will promote and actively work towards positive school-community relations.
In addition to addressing the physical safety of our buildings, it is also important to address and support positive engagement in schools. Improving school culture helps build relationships between students and staff. Students who are engaged WANT to be at school and staff and teachers that support positive interactions help support a healthy culture. One of my priorities is ensuring supports are in place for students, but also for staff and teachers to achieve healthier school environments.
