Why are you the best candidate for this position? (750 characters)

If elected, what will your top three priorities be and why? (500 characters)

How will you work with staff and teachers to promote safety in our schools? (500 characters)

As a ten-year resident of the Prior Lake Savage community, wife, mother of three school age children and successful business executive, I believe I have the leadership and experience to serve on the PLSAS School Board. I have served our community in various volunteer roles including the board of directors of the Prior Lake Players, our homeowner’s association and in various volunteer roles throughout the school and community. I am not afraid to ask the hard questions, evaluate facts versus opinions and respect diverse perspectives when making important decisions. In each role that I've served, I've led with integrity, dedication, and transparency, which I believe are the skills necessary to be an effective school board director.
With the lowest proficiency scores in the past decade, we must prioritize academic excellence and focus on the basic skills of reading, writing, math and science. We must support our teachers while providing a high-quality education for every student while being fiscally responsible to our community. Remove distractions and providing a world class education to every student in PLSAS. We need to evaluate best practices and implement changes to get our district back on track.
For the past year I have been advocating for administration to enforce attendance and bullying and harassment policies. Teacher’s need to be able to be empowered to create a respectful and structured classroom environment where they can focus on teaching, build relationships with the students and meet the needs of every student. I also believe we need more resource officers in uniform in our schools so they can monitor behavior and safety so teachers can focus on teaching.

If elected, I will listen to and serve the whole community. I will be a voice for all stakeholders, whether they voted for me or publicly spoke against me. I am a strong, compassionate, collaborative, servant leader with a strong moral compass. I will work wholeheartedly to help bring back trust by keeping academic achievement, teacher and staff support, and transparency and accountability the filters I use for district decision making; while respecting the diversity of our families, and protecting their values.
1 - Academic Achievement 2 - Teacher & Staff Support 3 - Transparency & Accountability.

Because the success and effectiveness of the district can be effectively measured by gauging and evaluating these key factors.

There are physical and emotional safety needs to be met. If elected, I will consistently schedule time to be present in our schools and available to teachers, staff, and students. I will listen and learn about them, their needs, and their experiences. I will collaborate with the other directors and the superintendent to create trustworthy policies and governance that fosters a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment; policies and governance that can be trusted by all stakeholders.

As a successful executive having held CFO and COO positions during my career, I had the opportunity to lead turnarounds at companies that struggled both operationally and financially. I see similar challenges currently facing our school district and I believe my experience in solving problems will serve the district well at improving student performance while assisting the administration to become more efficient and effective. I am intelligent, ethical and know how to communicate with people on all levels of an organization and with the public. I believe in public education and want our next generation of children to have the same opportunities to succeed in life as I had – and it starts with an effective K-12 education.
First, I want our district to focus more on core academics so we can reverse declining student proficiency in literacy, math and science. Secondly, our district is running budget deficits which are not sustainable so I intend to assist the district operate within our means. Lastly, our district needs to become more transparent so parents and taxpayers can better understand what is working, what is not and what changes are required for students to achieve academic excellence.
For the emotional needs of students, I intend to hold administration accountable to following policies that address bullying as well as bad behavior or behavior that distracts students from learning or prevents teachers from being effective teachers. Consequences for bad behavior or poor choices of a student must be enforced so the student learns what is and is not acceptable in school. I will support teachers and staff in this approach.

The District is integral to who I am. I have grown to love it as a parent, volunteer, community member, and now board director. I am a passionate advocate for public education and I worry that public education is at risk, with issues such as funding shortfalls, staffing shortages, and pandemic impacts and recent misinformation about what happens in schools. I am passionate about making sure EVERY student receives what they need to be successful. In the last 4 years I have built meaningful relationships in the District and community, and learned the reality of what serving on a school board involves. That experience will be invaluable if given the chance to serve the phenomenal students, staff, and families of our community.
ACHIEVEMENT: The best way to improve achievement is not simply to get back to basics but maintaining the momentum of giving each child what they uniquely need to be successful. TRUST: Trust matters among board members, with staff, and in the community. We need to trust students’ capacity to think critically and navigate challenges. CONNECTION: Our students need to feel connected to each other, and to the adults in schools. And we need to connect people in the community to better serve students.
There are two sides to safety. On the practical side there are the policies, procedures, cameras, and the District Response Team trained for potential major magnitude events. The other part of is creating a District culture where ALL students feel welcome and safe. This means providing training and resources for staff, promoting conversations around challenges, listening to students and elevating their voices, and partnering with community leaders because the District is not an island.

I lead with love in all things. I'll do the same for our students, staff and families. Our schools should be safe havens, protected places. I want to bring respect and civility back to our district. There's so much good in our district, yet more to be done to make it GREAT. And we can. I will be part of tough conversations with ALL sides of a decision or issue. I believe there is comfort in the discomfort, as that is where true action lives. I will listen to our kids, our educators, our tremendous staff with an open mind and a heart for action. I will work with other board members and our superintendent to champion our great schools, make real change and not allow the vitriol to take over. Public education needs an advocate, like me.
1. Inclusion and safety for ALL families: I believe everyone should feel welcome, safe, accepted and respected in our schools. I will not champion anything less. 2. Educator support: I want to provide resources for educators, mental health related and otherwise, then let them do the job they love. 3. An elementary voice: There are many great perspectives on the board currently. Yet, I want to be sure our youngest students and families have representation when it comes to decisions made.
The last few years of division has chipped away at the safety of our schools. I will bring a return of civility and true discussion, with the knowledge that there are often more than two sides to any story or decision. I will champion mental health resources for staff and children. I will ensure our educators feel supported in all things curriculum, safety and job security. I will be a proud advocate for PLSAS schools and work tirelessly to recruit and retain good people. Our kids depend on us!

A unifier who focuses on a shared vision.

Mental Health Supports in Schools. The pandemic revealed gaps and significant needs with our students. We need to equip our staff to be able to recognize needs, develop tools to de-escalate situations, support systems for our learners and for staff. Culture of Belonging. Regardless of our differences, we need safe spaces to teach, learn and become our best selves. Equity in Education. Not all learners are the same and should not be treated as though they are.
First and foremost by listening and observing activity in our schools. Trust yet verify the conditions so that we can make informed decisions that help provide tools, training, resources and technology to maintain a safe and secure environment for all who enter our buildings. Review of policies affecting building operations to make sure words and deeds are aligned. Funding. I believe that we spend money on areas we value. We value security and need to match that value with funding.
