I am a qualified candidate because of my work experience as well as my character qualities. I worked as a United States Postmaster for over 20 years, which included supervisory responsibilities and successfully negotiating contracts with the postal union. I worked with million-dollar budgets as well as working with local businesses and individuals in our community. My character qualities are as simple as ABC. A is for being accessible. I am retired and have time to work on school board issues. B is for being bold. I am willing to ask the hard questions and dedicated to being part of the solution. C is for being committed to helping to provide our students a path for success to be confident, critical thinkers who can attain their dreams.
Better communication: I want to encourage effective communication. This will result in building trust, providing clarity and resolving conflicts. Higher student achievement: We all know the pandemic had a profoundly negative effect on students' abilities to learn and achieve milestones. It's time to move forward and make plans how we again meet assessment goals. Fiscally responsible school budgeting: I am looking forward to working with the school district finance director to achieve this goal,
The district policy on bullying and harassment needs to be understood by all students, staff, parents and administration and understand there are consequences for negative behavior and be held accountable. If elected, I would also like to review the contract with the Owatonna Police Department to understand if we could make any improvements in how the school district works with the school resource officers to be sure staff, administration and students are aware of policies to keep them safe.
First and foremost, I am a parent of 4 children, 2 of whom are adopted, currently ages 6-19. We are a tri-racial family as two of our children are different races. We provider foster care. My husband and I have ample experience with the public school system, social services, and behavioral health care. I have worked as a health care provider for 21 years, mainly in family medicine, but also in adolescent mental health. As I have seen changes in the public school system over the last several years, I have more concerns and questions about curriculum, ideologies, and worldly exposures that my children are immersed in. Often times these exposures are without parents' knowledge. My strongest desire is to protect and nurture children.
Goal: most enthusiastic and motivated teachers and kids! 1. Create healthy classrooms with minimal distractions. This includes defining expectations for respectful and kind behaviors. 2. Create curriculum boundaries. Schools should be neutral with regard to politics and religion. I do not believe that critical race theory has a place in public school. 3. I would strive for improved communication to allow parents to have open dialogue with a school board who values their concerns and questions.
Schools need to remain neutral on multiple levels. This means keeping opinions regarding politics, religion, and sexual behavior personal. Every teacher and staff member should be approachable by a student in need so that appropriate resources can be found, whether it be for tutoring, counseling, or basic food and clothing needs. I would also love to see less hurtful and violent social media exposure and it seems that limited cell phone use could help with this.

I feel like I can be a voice for the parents who have been ignored by our current school board for the last few years. Our current board has stopped listening to parents about critical issues and just wants to push their agenda. I want to listen and converse with parents about their concerns. Our district did not listen to outraged parents about implementing CRT. They have slowly started accepting the nation wide craze of the gender identity movement. Lots of parents are not ok with this. None of this helps with the fact that 50% of the graduates from Owatonna are not at grade level in math and reading. I want to bring back common sense to our district.
My first priority would be to root out divisive things like CRT and the gender identity nonsense. I would also push for a more career path learning experience at the high school level to help kids that do not want to go to college get direction in life. We have a great need for people to work in the trades and we should get creative in our approach to this. Give class credits for kids to apprentice with local companies to learn a skill. Last I would cut the admin budget.
If true safety is a priority then we need cameras in every class room. If there is any conduct that is out of hand it will all be on camera and this will allow total transparency. No more he said she said.
As both a parent and community member, I decided to run for school board after being approached by parents and Owatonna citizens who indicated a desire to have more of an active voice in decisions being made about what their children are being exposed to and taught in public schools. I believe I can be that voice. I have attended school board meetings for over 17 months to observe and learn more about its proceedings and processes. I am on the OHS task force to recommend what will happen to the current building after this year. I currently serve on the Owatonna Lacrosse Association Board, and I am on the committee for the Family Unity Network at my church.
The pursuit of excellence in the education of our students and increasing proficiency levels, securing and maintaining the quality of teachers, staff and administration, along with increasing retention of teachers, transparency and accountability at all levels, and public safety are my priorities. Proficiency levels need to be increased because they are the pillars of a great education and foundational to the success of our students.
I am committed to working together and listening to staff, students and parents with regards to the safety in our schools. I take concerns seriously, and I am firmly committed to restoring appropriate authority to teachers and staff along with requiring accountability from not only our students but administration and teachers. Additionally, I support working closely together with our local law enforcement professionals to help guide and ensure public safety in our schools.
